Melanie Gray Receives Award

Carrin Patman, left, an advisory board member of Girls, Inc. of Greater Houston, congratulates Melanie Gray, SU '81, a partner in the law form of Weil, Gotshal & Manges, LLP, who was awarded with the Girls Inc. Strong, Smart and Bold Award at the organization's annual awards luncheon at the Westin Galleria hotel.

2007 High School Student Recruiting

With big smiles, hearty handshakes, box-loads of colorful brochures, and well-rehearsed pitches, SUH alumni will once again fan out to high schools throughout greater Houston this Fall to try and attract academically talented and socially well-rounded youngsters to our beloved alma mater.   This season’s itinerary includes more than 20 college fairs that will be attended by perhaps as many as 20,000 students from more than 75 high schools.

Many thanks to Andy Spector (SU ’66), who’s been coordinating SUH’s recruiting efforts for a decade now. “I don’t think any other alumni club in the country can match what the Houston club accomplishes,” says Andy.

Joyce Akins (SU 2000) has recently joined Andy as co-chair of the college night outreach effort.  “The information we share and the questions we answer greatly help students and their families in the decision-making process,” says Joyce.

If any SUH alumni would like to volunteer at any of these or future college fairs, contact: Andy Spector, (713) 623-8882 or Andrew.E.Spector@SmithBarney.com; or Joyce Akins, (713) 270-1318 or Joyce_Akins@Hotmail.com

Membership Continues to Grow

At the end of 2007, the Club had 51 currently registered members, including 11 recent graduates.  This is a nice increase over the approximately 30 members we had a few years ago.  There are also about 120 other Club participants, un-registered SU Alums who attended one or more Club events during the past 6 years.

High School Recruiting Shows Impressive Results

In the Fall 2007 Semester, 61 Greater Houston area students enrolled in SU.  These included 20 New Freshmen, 1 New Transfer Student, and 40 Returning Undergrads.  The overall Freshman Class of 3,100 students is pretty bright, with a Grade Point Average of 3.6 (out of 4.0), and a SAT Mid Range of 1,130-1,310 (out of 1,600) compared to a 1,000 average score.

Social Events – Combining Fun & Community Service

New & Returning Students Send Off Party – Thurs Aug 16, 2007

SU Trustee and SUH Member Melanie Gray, and husband Mark, again hosted this “get together” for SU students, parents, and Alums to share University experiences and pride.  Melanie welcomed the 62 guests, and described her enthusiasm for Chancellor Nancy Cantor’s highly acclaimed “Scholarship in Action” program to engage SU students and faculty with local, state, national, and world communities.  Melanie also urged her guests to consume the beverages and light hors d’oeuvres, so her family wouldn’t have to be eating the same food for the next two weeks!  SUH’s Joyce Akins again coordinated the non-hostess activities, including Publicity and Q&A Session planning.  SUH President John Auth conducted the Awards Ceremony, giving much needed warm SU sweatshirts to 13 New Freshmen, and awarding $150 TexBucks Scholarships for books and supplies to 18 Returning Undergrads.  Congratulations to Melanie and Mark, whose son was one of the new SU Freshmen attending the Party!

SUmmer Chill-Out Beach Party – Sun May 20, 2007

SUH Board Member Felicia Griffin hosted the 3rd Annual SUmmer Chill-Out Beach Party on Galveston’s West Beach.  The 30+ Guests included SU Alums, their families, new ’07 Grads, and friends.  The SUmmer Chill-Out featured snacks, cold drinks, surf, sun, and beach games.  Felicia conducted the traditionally expected raucous Raffle & Auction to raise $179 for the SUH TexBucks Scholarship Fund … and had the bidders yelling for “more stuff”!

A Kiss & More, The Essence of Chocolate – Sat Feb 10, 2007

Club Secretary Treasurer Mike Dach, and wife Pat, hosted a chocolate extravaganza for 13 SU Alums and Guests.  SU Alum Marvin Stone, a noted Houston Chocolatier and Leisure Learning lecturer, conducted the program.  Marvin explained what chocolate is, its chemistry, its health benefits, and how to distinguish quality from junk.  Party fees raised $120 for the TexBucks Scholarship Fund.  After sampling and evaluating 31 different varieties of cocoa based products, participants left with a memorable taste of a “Houston chocolate high”.

Holiday Party – Sat Dec 09, 2006

Club Secretary Treasurer Mike Dach, and wife Pat, hosted a dinner party for 24 Guests, including 14 SU Alums.  Folks mingled while visions of the Syracuse Winter Wonderland flashed on the wide screen TV.  The culinary plan again proved that “Pot Luck Dinners Always Work”.  Our notorious Fun(d) Raising Team of Griffin & Moreno conducted a spirited Raffle & Auction that raised $504 for the Club’s TexBucks scholarship program.  The raffle incentive collected canned food, which was donated to the Houston Food Bank.  Look for the Holiday Party pictures displayed in this website.

Alumni Reception for SU Chancellor Nancy Cantor – Sun Nov 12, 2006

SU Trustee and SUH Member John Riley, and wife Diane, hosted this gala event honoring Chancellor Nancy Cantor at La Colombe D’or Ballroom in the Montrose area.  SU Trustee and SUH Member Melanie Gray also had a hand in arranging this first ever official visit by a SU Chancellor to Houston.  Attendees were primarily 120 Houston area SU Alums, Guests, and Parents of current students.  The Reception was coordinated by SUH Director Laura Neustadt, setting the bar for a “very hard act to follow”.  Chancellor Cantor presented a briefing, enhanced with a slide presentation, of her “Scholarship in Action” vision for the University.  An enjoyable evening was had by all, filled with admiration for our dynamic Chancellor, pride in SU’s past, and excitement for SU’s future!
